Hospitality Headquarters!

BUMC is a place of encouragement

1873 immigrant families from Bohemia, Slovakia, and Germany settled in the north Broadway area. They shaped ministry at the community's Methodist Church to "Americanize" their families through Sunday School, sports, music and cultural activities. The current building and edifice became permanent home for this young congregation in 1918. During that same time, nine German School style stained glass windows were installed in the sanctuary. A parishioner commissioned a life-size copy of Leonardo DaVinci's Last Supper for the sanctuary in 1925 to complete the beauty of our sacred worship space.

Both gifts are priceless contributions and they link the histroical wealth of the church to the community. The congregation has maintained focus on meeting community needs by providing cultural activities for low income families in the north Broadway community. This includes production of plays; concerts, and renovations in the 1980's to accommodate a Korean congregation and later a childcare center.  Hot meals are still prepared for the needy and a food pantry is open once a month.

In 2007 the church received another facelift. An elevator was installed, floors upgraded, walls painted and the North Coast District relocated its headquarters to the Broadway facility.

Art is a tool that helps our families create identity and understand their reality.  Art encourages students to express themselves through group collaboration.
